Why is it that it is so easy to focus on the negative things that happen in our daily routine that sometimes all the good things are missed?
When you wake-up in the morning are you ever glad just to wake-up? I know I have not given it much thought. I take it for granted that I just will.
Just the other night my husband and I were tired from a long work week & our daughter begged us to rent the new movie "Twilight" that had just came out. I was not feeling all that well as I was suffering from seasonal allergies and wanted nothing more than to curl up in bed with the comforts of my tissues. She offered to heat up left overs, poor child can not boil water without burning it :0( She asked me if she could make me some chicken soup and then we could all watch the movie together. It had been such a long time that we have all just sat together and watched a movie. We did and then had our usual discussion about the movie. I didn't realize how much I missed that.
This weekend has been one of, I guess you can say re-awakening for me. Just the smallest of things can bring such joy and sense of happiness. Just yesterday, my husband and I were having our weekend cup of coffee on our patio in the backyard and debating a spontaneous trip somewhere. He made the most profound statement, "Sometimes we need to just slow down and appreciate all the things we have worked for already." "Why is it that people work their whole lives to try to obtain their own home and make it beautiful then work to get away from it?" I never thought of it this way. We have waited so long to have a home of our own and it is our garden of serenity.
I remember my Grandmother who raised me, used to always say, "Count your blessings everyday"! I believe this is one of the most important things she ever taught me.
Back in 1991 I was three months pregnant with my youngest daughter the one I spoke of above and someone was burglarizing our home. It was New Year's Eve and five minutes to midnight. We had went to a show and came home and surprised the burglar. We were all shot. I was shot in the abdomen and bleeding internally. They had to perform emergency surgery to stop the internal bleeding. They did not know if we were going to make it. As it was said to me days after the surgery it was a miracle and by the grace of God that we survived. They had to sever a part of my large intestine, a piece of my liver was missing but the best part was that my baby girl had survived! The surgeon said that it was a true miracle, she had her foot up on the walls of the womb and the bullet had hit and bounced off, and then exited through my back. She is seventeen and I tell her she is my miracle from God and there is definately a plan for her life!
We see or experience miracles everyday sometimes in the form of a person, a gesture, a picture or just plain waking up in the morning.
I am going to make it a point to be appreciative, positive and grateful for all the wonderful things in my life EVERYDAY! How about you???
